An Opportunity Open to All Cohorts to Build CBPR Capacity in Their Communities and Institutions
The Detroit URC is delighted to announce a new train-the-trainers opportunity that supports CBPR Partnership Academy participants to expand equitable CBPR skills and partnerships in their communities and institutions. The yearlong program will provide resources and activities for up to 15 community-academic pairs of at least one CBPR Partnership Academy participant and their partner to develop and implement a capacity building workshop/training activity in their local context. Recognizing the diversity of circumstances since completing the yearlong program, Partnership Academy participants can apply with their original partner or someone else with whom they are partnering using a CBPR approach.

Guided by CBPR principles of co-learning and equity, all activities build upon the experience and expertise of participants and are co-facilitated by experienced community and academic partners associated with the Detroit URC. Program content will include: CBPR approach and methods (e.g., all topics covered in the Partnership Academy week-long course); experiential action learning approach and strategies; adapting materials to different contexts; developing case studies; sample activities for community members and academics; and evaluation. The course and co-learning strategy sessions will provide teams the opportunity to work together and apply tools to assist them in planning and carrying out at least one capacity building activity (e.g., workshop, training, learning community) during the year.
PROGRAM COSTS and EXPECTATIONS
- Program Costs

The program will cover tuition, lodging, continental breakfast, lunch, and daytime snacks. Participants will be responsible for transportation to and from Ann Arbor and evening meals. Each team is eligible for reimbursement of up to $1,000 for participant travel costs not covered by the program (e.g., airfare, ground transportation) with receipts. Teams are highly encouraged to seek available funds from their institutions, such as career development and conference travel grants.

● Participate in periodic co-learning activities (e.g. orientation, strategy sessions, mentoring, final reflection session) during the one-year program
● Develop and carry out at least one local capacity-building activity (e.g., training, workshop, learning community) during the year
● Complete all evaluation activities and a final report
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA and SELECTION CRITERIA
- Community-Academic Team Criteria
-
● Pairs of a community and an academic partner who have engaged in CBPR or closely related approach (e.g., participatory action research, equitable community-engaged research) together, at least one of whom completed the yearlong CBPR Partnership Academy program (any of Cohorts 1-5)
● Experience and commitment to using a CBPR approach to research and action
● Interest in enhancing/applying their CBPR knowledge and co-facilitation skills to train others in CBPR
● Established relationship with the community/institution that is the focus of the capacity building
● Commitment to plan and carry out at least one CBPR capacity building workshop, training, or program in their community/institution
● Ability to attend program events in community-academic pairs and work in partnership throughout the year-long program
● Support for yearlong participation in the program from partners’ institution and organization (with letters of support)
- Community Partner Criteria

● Hold a mid-to-upper level position in the organization
● Have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training, and 3-5 years of relevant work experience
- Academic Partner Criteria

● Hold a faculty/research position affiliated with an academic or research institution in the US
● Have an advanced degree (doctoral level preferred)
- Selection Criteria

● At least one partner participated in the Partnership Academy, and both partners have experience in CBPR or closely related approach (e.g., participatory action research, equitable community-engaged research)
● Evidence of commitment to CBPR principles and co-learning process
● Evidence of responsiveness to the community’s needs and interests
● Identified a local need for and interest in CBPR workshops/training
● Potential impact of the program on team and community/organization/institution
● Evidence that proposal was jointly developed

● Letters of Support: Please provide two letters of support: one from a supervisor (for community partner) and one from an academic chair or equivalent (for academic partner) showing support for each applicant to participate in the one-year program, including attendance during the three day in-person course.
